My Professional Journey
The psychologist Carl Jung believed no one should practice psychotherapy without first gaining some real life experience. That idea has shaped my own path.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent ten years working as an airline pilot — fulfilling a childhood dream. But I felt called toward a more human-centered profession, one that could engage both heart and mind. That led me to pursue a career in counseling.
After earning my master’s degree from the University of Montana, I worked in both private and public nonprofit settings before opening my own practice. Since 2009, I’ve been serving clients in Portland, Oregon.
My Approach
Good psychotherapy has been described as a balance between science and art. Not enough science, and the process can become ungrounded. Not enough art, and the process can become rigid, cold, and clinical.
I have found that no one therapeutic approach works with any client 100% of the time. Choosing what approach to use, and when, is part of the art of psychotherapy.
That said, I have found that mindfulness approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) have proven highly effective for many of my clients.
